Plans are afoot for a former Altona North school site to be redeveloped in to 127 townhouses up to three storeys high.
The state government’s planning authority, Development Victoria (DV), has revealed plans to develop the 2.4-hectare Altona Gate Primary School site, bound by Blackshaws Road and Misten, Rosala and Glade avenues.
A master plan is scheduled to be lodged in June, with DV to apply to Hobsons Bay council for a planning permit later this year.
The DV website stated the planned townhouse development would be designed to allow “three generations to live in one home”.
“According to Victoria in Future 2016, the population of Hobsons Bay is expected to rise from 94,434 in 2017 to 109,442 in 2031,” it stated.
“The area will need approximately 476 new homes each year [based on an average size of 2.1 people per home] to keep up with this growth.”
Each property will have two to four bedrooms and off-street parking would be provided.
The Department of Education and Training has said it will keep the site of the former Eastona Park Primary School in Collins Avenue, Altona North, allowing for it to be reconsidered if the population grows.
A community information session about the development will be held at Walker Close Community Centre, 180 Millers Road, Altona North, from 10.30am-noon on Saturday, May 20.
