Photographer Nancy Flammea has created award-winning modern masterpieces with her camera in the garage of her Altona North home.

She has been named Victorian Family Photographer of the Year by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography for her photographic portraits, which use a painterly style and Rembrandt lighting.

Her business, Captured Image Photography, creates unique images that are reminiscent of fine art pieces using costumes and props in her humble studio.

“About five years ago, I was able to get myself a decent camera and just slowly work towards being a professional,” Flammea said.

“Generally, the people who come to me, they want something done in my style so they know it’s going to be something of a bygone age, which is usually what I aim for.

“I do have a slight obsession with past lives and who we might have been in a past life so I just wait until I get some sort of instinct or vibe from a client and work on that and they’re usually happy to go along with my crazy idea.”

One of her winning portraits of a mother with her two children in a circus theme took about a year to organise. After winning several gold and silver gongs at the Victorian Professional Photography Awards, she will be in the running at the national awards in August.
