Parks Victoria has released the tender for the construction of a new Altona Pier, with an awarding of a contract scheduled for late August.

With collaboration with AW Maritime engineers and Site Office Landscape Architects, Jackson Clements Burrows Architects released the schematic designs in May, following consultation undertaken in 2020.

The plans included a heritage-look timber deck, a Y-shaped head and an accessible lower landing.

Parks Victoria southern and maritime regional director Jo Richards said the new project would enrich the Altona foreshore for all community members.

“Altona Pier is a much-loved coastal destination in Melbourne’s west,” she said.

“The project to rebuild the pier will result in a wonderful facility to benefit the local community, as well as visitors, fishers and boaters.

“Designed in conjunction with feedback from the community, the new pier will be safer, more accessible and provide a destination for the whole community to enjoy for decades to come.”

Last repaired in the 1980s and spanning back to the 1800s, Parks Victoria has partially closed the existing pier and earmarked it for removal.

As part of this process, they have planned to salvage timber from the old pier to provide a connection to the past.

Tenders for the Altona Pier redevelopment will close on Thursday, July 7 ahead of works planned to begin in late 2022.
