Altona Pier will undergo a $10 million redevelopment and locals are being asked to provide their input on the new design.
Three options for the new pier are:
• Replacing the pier to a similar layout and length;
• A new T-shaped pier head, providing more space for recreational activities such as fishing; and
• A new angled pier head (45 degrees) with shade and seating.
Altona Pier was built in 1888 and was originally 149 metres longer, extending nearly 400 metres into Altona Bay.
Its longer length was designed for its original purpose to transport potential land buyers by steamship and later to transport people to and from the city.
Significant repair works were carried out in 1950s, but the government says the current structure is nearing the end of its functional life.
Williamstown MP and Ports and Freight Minister Melissa Horne yesterday announced the redevelopment as part of a $24 million investment into the government’s Better Piers and Waterside Facilities program.
“This work will create jobs for local workers, provide an economic injection to regional areas and see a long-term boost for the fishing, aquaculture and tourism industries as we rebuild from the coronavirus pandemic,” Ms Horne said.
“This work will replace old infrastructure with newer and safer facilities so they can be enjoyed for generations to come.
“We understand how important these piers are to their local communities so it’s vital for us to address the needs of residents and pier users.”
People can fill out an online survey until August 19. Two online community information sessions will be held on August 4 and 5.
Under the government’s program, Portarlington Pier will also undergo a $9.6 million redevelopment and repairs and safety upgrades will be carried out at several other piers including Middle Brighton, Queenscliff South and Rye.
