The new Altona police station has been officially opened, allowing local police to continue serving the Hobsons Bay community long into the future.

Police minister Lisa Neville, Altona MP Jill Hennessy and Williamstown MP Melissa Horne came together to tour the facility and officially open the building which has been operational since 2020 but had yet to be officially unveiled due to the pandemic.

The station has been designed to accommodate over 140 staff and will provide 24-hour services to the wider Hobsons Bay community.

The site, located at 1 Galvin Street, received a $19.5 million investment from the state government, with the uniform branch, criminal investigation unit and crime scene services all now able to do their work out of the modern offices.

Among the key features of the new station are new interview rooms, an open public entrance and foyer, conference room facilities, separate public consultation facilities, high-level security and improved staff amenities.

Police minister Lisa Neville said local police stations are at the heart of community policing.

“The impressive new Altona Police Station is allowing Victoria Police to better serve and protect the residents of the growing Altona community and beyond,” she said.

Ms Hennessy agreed that the upgraded station would better serve the municipality.

“These upgrades enhance the policing response and engagement across the region and mean our police officers are more accessible for people who both live in the Hobsons Bay community and visit the area,” she said.
