Altona primary uses windfall to renovate library

All that was old will be new again once repairs are completed in time for Altona primary school’s centenary.

The school will receive $23,000 as part of the latest round of state government maintenance grants, which it will use to renovate the library.

The school was one of more than 150 public schools, and the only one in Hobson’s Bay, to share in $27 million earmarked in the state budget to fix ageing buildings and infrastructure.

The school was identified as one most in need of repairs following an independent audit of government schools.

“Our buildings were really in need of repairs,” principal Kevin Enright said.

“We received a government grant of $186,000 to renovate our main buildings last year and the library is the last building to be fixed up in time for our 100-year celebrations in October.”

The maintenance funding will be used to renovate and refurbish almost 330 buildings at 153 schools across Victoria.

“We’re rebuilding schools across the state and giving students the safe, modern and comfortable classrooms that they need to learn,” education minister James Merlino said.

“The government is investing more than $4 billion to make Victoria the education state so every child gets the chance to succeed.”
