Altona P-9 College students are working hard to bring some Christmas cheer to young people who have no permanent roof over their heads, or are at risk of finding themselves homeless.

The year 7 students have collaborated with Altona-based Latitude, which provides a range of supports to youth aged 15-25.

Teacher Joshua Moore said the students had asked local businesses for donations of food and basic essentials to make up Christmas hampers for Latitude’s young clientele.

Year 7 students Sarah Brennan and Angelina Rotheram said they were motivated to help Latitude because the young people were of similar ages to them.

“These kids aren’t much older than us,” Sarah said. “If we didn’t have what we have now, we could be like that in a few years … we’re so fortunate.

“I think that Christmas is when you get presents and I think it just shows that someone cares about them, so it makes them just that little bit more happy.”

Angelina said businesses had been very supportive.

“Just about every business we’ve contacted has responded … or donated something or attempted to help us with vouchers,” she said.

Latitude manager Rhonda Collins described the students’ actions as “magic”.

‘What a wonderful project, young people supporting young people,” she said.

“The students will develop a whole range of skills as they approach local businesses for donations and, most importantly, they are part of the discussion around the issue of youth homelessness.

“It’s magic stuff. The hampers will be delivered to our young people, and they will certainly make a difference at what is a difficult time of year for our young people.”

Students will be collecting items until Monday, with collection boxes for community donations placed in the school’s office, and at Elle and Stuart Boutique at 89 Pier Street, Altona.

Latitude, which is in Somers Parade, will also welcome donations for its food pantry.

Suitable items include tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits, pasta, rice, sauce, soup, canned food, cereal, spreads, long-life milk and juice, and toilet paper.
