Altona Vikings are on the hunt

As Altona Football Club celebrates its centenary, the Vikings are sounding the siren for players.

Altona Junior Football Club president Vito Rubino said the club, established in a Pier Street cafe in 1918, wanted to continue its proud tradition. It was started by James Duke, Dick Bloomberg and several Altona traders as a place for their returned servicemen sons.

“Purple and Gold were the colors of their regiment,” Rubino said.

“As a legacy of founding father of the club James Duke, two of his great-great-great-grandsons currently play for the Altona Junior Football Club, and one for the Altona Football Club in the under-19s.

“Similarly, there are others whose great-great-grandfather played in the original team in 1918.”

Rubino said the club is struggling to fill its under-14 team.

“This was a premiership team from last season and we are desperate to keep this team together,” he said.

“The positive environment our club offers will help them [players] deal with the challenges that they face as teenagers.

“Another one of our teams that will be short on numbers is an under-18 girls’ team, which is a brand new team that we’re forming,” Rubino said.
