Altona’s great mouse race

Betting is bound to be fierce on which creature will win by a whisker during a mouse-racing day to raise money for Altona City Soccer Club this month.

Five rodents will compete in each race, with each mouse numbered and named.

Club president Joe Tanti said the fastest mice would snare prize money for club members and friends.

“I built a track and five of them race at a time,” he said. “We do a form guide and everything.”

Behind the heart-pounding action is a serious cause.

The Altona City clubrooms at Kim Reserve were broken into over Christmas, with intruders causing wanton damage to the facilities.

“We are doing it a little bit tough at the moment,” Mr Tanti said.

“Our facilities are not the best at the moment so we want to spend a bit of money on that.

“They broke in Christmas Eve and just ripped the kitchen apart and the bar apart.

“I don’t know what they were looking for … they just trashed the joint, so we’ve got a bit of stuff to fix up.”

The mouse race day will be on Sunday, February 25, from 11.30am at Altona Bowling Club, 113 Civic Parade, Altona.

Races will run from noon to 4pm with a free barbecue lunch at 1pm.

No animals will be hurt during the day’s racing.
