Life in a local motorcycle club will be celebrated at the launch of a book documenting the western suburbs’ own Angels.
Angels is an autobiographical account of life in the motorcycle club in the 1960s and ’70s, co-written by Altona couple, former member David King and historian Maureen Lane.
Ms Lane said she felt it was important to preserve the history of the Angels, which at its peak boasted 305 members.
“I wanted to record their history so these Angels could take their rightful place in a history book for the aging members of Angels to read, remember the good old days and share with their families – although some of them might have a bit of explaining to do,“ she said.
“David met the Angels when he was just 10 years old, so the circumstances of that meeting and his difficult childhood were included as an introduction to this history and an explanation of the times.
“When we thought that we had finished the book, we printed some copies to be distributed to the members of the club but then more stories came to light from the readers.
“As we had hoped, memories were triggered and many people were keen to talk to us about their experiences of the old days.“
The Angels book launch is at the Pirates Tavern in Williamstown on Sunday, February 14, starting at 1pm with live music from 3pm.
People are being invited to bring their motorcycles and classic cars to display in the car park.
The book is available online and at Sun Bookshop Yarraville and Dymocks.
