Anglers of all ages are hoping to bag the big one when the Hobsons Bay Sport and Game Fishing Club holds its Melbourne Cup Snapper Challenge this weekend.

About 500 keen anglers are expected to join the annual event near the Altona clubrooms at W.G. Cresser Reserve.

About $60,000 in prizes will be up for grabs, while family activities will include a jumping castle, clown, temporary tattooist and a kids’ corner.

Club president Lou Falzon said the event has been growing in popularity every year, with a strong focus on getting younger people involved.

“We’ve been trying to encourage fishing for the kids, get them away from their iPads and iPhones and out fishing,” he said. “Every kid who takes part gets a prize of a free rod.”

While all the children’s tickets have been sold, spots remain for adults keen to wet a line.

Mr Falzon expects hot competition at daily weigh-ins, from Friday until noon Sunday.

“Victoria, as a fishery, is the best it’s been for a long time,” he said. “This event is great for the area.”

An event briefing is on at the Hobsons Bay Sport and Game Fishing clubrooms tonight (Wednesday) at 7pm. Tickets: $50.
