Another string to their bow

Young musicians will learn from well known conductor Simon Harvey in his new role at the head of the High School’s String Orchestra.

Students aged between five and 15 from around the west will work with Harvey when the new ensemble performs later this year.

The orchestra is a product of youth music program Strings West.

Strings West director Laura Sheridan said the aim was to transform students into joyous, confident musicians.

“When I moved to the west, I was amazed that there were so few opportunities for young string musicians to play together,” she said.

“I really wanted to find a way to support them. So I joined the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club and they helped me start Strings West.”

She said she was excited about having Harvey participate in Strings West.

“I’ve seen him working in the community with others,” she said. “He shares all of that experience with people and he inspires them.

“His gentle and respectful attitude to his ensemble members creates an enduring passion for music and produces amazing results.”

Mr Harvey says he is excited about leading the new ensemble.

“There’s nothing like playing music together,” he says.

“I’m really looking forward to working with young string players again – we can have fun and make some great music.”
