Drivers are being warned to avoid Napier Street in Footscray after a truck carrying two containers crashed into the railway overpass during Friday peak hour.
One container was forced off the east-bound truck and wedged under the bridge in the incident
which occurred just before 8.30am.
VicRoads warned traffic was affected in both directions.
“Avoid the area if possible and seek alt route. Barkly St/Hopkins St is one alternative.”
Eastbound traffic is being diverted north up Nicholson Street while westbound is now down to one lane.

Metro reported minor delays on Werribee/Williamstown lines between Newport and Footscray.
Last year Maribyrnong Council demanded urgent action to cut the number of over-height trucks crashing into the rail bridge after 43 incidents since 2010, as well as dozens of unreported collisions.
About 3000 trucks travel beneath the bridge every day, many transporting containers to and from the Port of Melbourne.
Maribyrnong councillor Nam Quach labelled the site “a time bomb” that will result in the death of a pedestrian.
