Plans have been lodged for three adjoining five-storey apartment blocks at the former Aero Wash n Fuel service station and car wash at 102-106 Pier Street.
Plans show No.102 would have 17 dwellings and 19 car spaces, No.104 would have 18 dwellings and 24 car spaces and No.106 would have 16 dwellings and 24 car spaces – a total of 51 dwellings and 67 car spaces.
A report submitted on behalf of the applicants by Metropol Planning Solutions states the Hobsons Bay planning scheme encourages intensified development in Altona beach activity centre and the northern section of Pier Street. It states the apartments will provide an alternative to the predominant three-bedroom houses in the Altona area.
“The proposed development will provide affordable housing stock when compared to that of the $917,500 average house price in the surrounding area, providing the opportunity for ageing cohorts to remain within the local area,” it states.
“We submit that the interface with the residential area to the east has been sympathetically treated through the stepping back of the upper levels so as to avoid unreasonable visual bulk impacts.
“The traffic report prepared by Cardno demonstrates that the carparking design is efficient and meets relevant standards and that the proposal will not impact on carparking availability in the local area.”
