Armed man arrested at Highpoint

An armed man has been arrested at Highpoint Shopping Centre in Maribyrnong.

Shoppers reported they had seen a man believed to be carrying a knife at the centre on Monday morning.

Shoppers and staff were evacuated from the centre and police located the man on level two about 11.30am.

Maribyrnong Police Inspector Tony Long said speculation on social media that gunshots were fired was incorrect.

“A suspicious male was sighted at the centre and responding police included the Critical Incident Response Team,” he said.

“No shots were fired, no firearms were involved, except those carried by police, and the man was taken into custody without incident or injury.”

No one was injured during the incident.
