Local Maribyrnong visual and performing artists are invited to express their interest in public art or artist residency opportunities in Maribyrnong.
The state government is providing $200,000 to partner with Maribyrnong council to deliver street art and other public art in the Footscray CBD.
Council said this is designed to enliven public places and foster the city’s creative communities and deter vandalism.
Artists can express interest in a range of street art commissions from small to large, scale or a neon artwork.
Additionally, council said it is offering performing artists the opportunity to apply for a residency in the Bluestone Church Arts Space where they will be provided with a stipend, in-kind venue and technical and marketing support.
The residency program is open to performers, dancers, musicians and multi-disciplinary artists at all stages of a project’s lifecycle from development to production-ready.
Maribyrnong mayor Sarah Carter said these are exciting opportunities for local artists to contribute to making Maribyrnong a unique and vibrant cultural hub.
“We are proud to support local artists, at all stages of their careers, and acknowledge the role that the arts has in making our city a place where people want to live, visit or play,” she said.
“Council’s popular StreetWORKS program has commissioned over 30 artworks on walls in public spaces since its inception in 2014.
“While activating spaces and telling local stories, the program also actively discourages graffiti and tagging.
“I encourage all eligible artists to apply. From what we have seen in previous years, the West is full of talented visual and performing artists and I look forward to seeing what comes from this round of commissions.”
The commission opportunities include StreetWORKS murals which is a major commission or up to 8 small-medium commissions, applications close midnight Sunday, September 24.
Illuminate Footscray is a commission of a neon artwork to illuminate the entrance to the Footscray CBD, applications close midnight Sunday, September 24.
As well as Bluestone Church Arts Space Residency, applications 12pm on Friday, September 29.
