Australia Day in Altona starts off with a bang as Altona Village Traders Association celebrates a special 10-year anniversary.

President Kim Walsh said this year’s celebrations would be the biggest ever. “We started off way back with our sand sculptures in the middle of Pier Street,” he said.

“This year … will be bigger and better than all the previous ones.”

Celebrations, centred around Altona beach, Logan Reserve and Pier Street, start at 11am and culminate in fireworks at 9.30pm.

Highlights include a sand castle competition, horse-drawn carriages and camel rides on the beach.

Celebrations kick off at Seaworks in Williamstown on Australia Day eve from 6-9.30pm with tall ship tours and fireworks at 9.15pm.

The entertainment, including Enterprize sails, continues on Australia Day from 10am-4pm.

Yarraville will host the third free Stony Creek Music Festival on Australia Day from 2p-7pm at McNish Reserve, Cruickshank Park, Yarraville.
