More opportunities to learn how to dribble and shoot hoops with the cream of the crop of basketball coaching is on offer at 3 Street Basketball.

Located at 61 Dohertys Road in Altona North, the facilities offer a range of programs, including casual 3×3 competitive matches and junior coaching opportunities.

3 Street community development manager Jack Sharman said they aim to be inclusive of people of all athletic abilities.

“We’re proud to connect the west with more sports more often, with all levels of coaching, 5v5 leagues, court hire, a gym and recovery centre we can accommodate anyone looking to move,” he said.

Mr Sharman said the casual 3×3 competitions allow for players who are less fit or returning from injury to play return to the court with a softer approach to the game.

“One of the biggest takeaways from COVID is that fewer people are willing to commit to full season of sport, so we thought this could be an opportunity to present a new format of basketball in a newly administered way,” he said.

“After we speak to teams or individuals who are keen, they are added to our Facebook group dedicated to news and registration for these games.

“Each Monday and Wednesday, a poll is taken to get an idea of the interest and from that our referees and courts are confirmed and individuals who don’t have a team will be placed on a team for the night.”

Mr Sharman said there were also coaching opportunities for junior players through Olympia Athletics and sports performance director Neal Wen.

“Neal and his team at Olympia have a star-studded line-up of former athletes that’ve come though his development program such as Josh Giddey, Geva Mentor, Jo Lual-Acuil, Mangok Mathiang and more,” he said. “It’s been exciting to see how the coaching has grown down here, there is some serious talent on the way.

“We’ve also got a new 5v5 league starting soon, a fun alternative to kids’ birthday parties on the court that the community is loving, NBL Hustle events and other tournaments coming up.”
