Big Build ramping up for summer

West Gate Freeway and West Gate Bridge users are advised to expect delays as maintenance works on the West Gate Bridge and major works on the City Loop and Metro Tunnel continue.

Annual West Gate Bridge maintenance will take place between Monday, December 26 and Wednesday, January 4, closing four outbound lanes with only one outbound lane open to traffic, which may lead to delays of more than 90 minutes, with drivers urged to find an early detour.

Significant delays are expected across Melbourne, including on the West Gate Freeway between the city and the West Gate Bridge.

With the tunnel boring machines surging past the halfway mark on the West Gate Tunnel project, works will get underway on Footscray Road, Wurundjeri Way and the West Gate Freeway at Williamstown Road in January and February to widen the West Gate Freeway and build new connections to the CBD and CityLink.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the projects will have more than 19,000 workers on the ground delivering the upgrades over the coming months.

“It’s our biggest summer of Victoria’s Big Build,” she said.

Whether driving, using public transport or cycling, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay commuters are asked to allow extra time and plan their journey by checking the PTV or VicTraffic apps before they travel.
