The best-known blues club in Melbourne’s west has found a new home in Newport.

The Way Out West (WOW) Roots Music Club, formerly at the now-closed Williamstown RSL Club, will be based at the Newport Bowls Club.

WOW president Rob Rowe, who is also the Williamstown RSL sub-branch president, said the music club had quickly developed a reputation after forming more than 15 years ago.

It has hosted some of the best Australian and international artists, including Grammy award-winning Blues Hall of Fame musicians such as Charlie Musselwhite and John Hammond.

Joe Louis Walker, who played at George Bush snr’s inauguration, has been a guest.

Meanwhile, the Newport Bowls Club has long been a favourite for musos.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Jamaican rocksteady legends Keith Rowe and Texas Dixon – music royalty – chose to have a few beers there after playing across the road at The Substation.

Mr Rowe said he was pleased and excited to set up shop in the heart of Newport.

“It’s really great to find a home where people really appreciate what you do, and the people at that venue – the president all through to the committee and staff – have been really appreciative of what we do,” he said.

“We’re really going to try to create a partnership with them.

“What our punters have said is that they love Newport station being so close.

“We look forward to many years of partnering with the Newport Bowls Club in bringing to our community the best roots music in the land.”

Newport Bowls Club is at 4 Market Street, Newport.
