Bowlers aim for jacks, and jills

An “old-school” bowling club hopes to turn falling membership numbers around with a recruitment campaign.

Altona North Bowls Club had more than 100 members in its heyday, but now there are just 40 active players.

Committee members including Pauline Lacy hope the membership push will help spread the word.

She said the club had been operating for 30 years “yet most residents wouldn’t know it existed”.

The club successfully fielded several teams in the ’80s, but Ms Lacy said an ageing population and lack of exposure had left the club in dire need of new members and players.

Fellow committee member Gerry Carton says he wants to see the Altona club once more abuzz with activity at weekends.

“Falling membership is happening everywhere, not just at our club,” he said. “Men and women used to play during the week and then on the weekends they’d bring the kids down and have a game together.”

Ms Lacy said the club had hosted a number of charity fundraisers over the years to support the Altona community.

“The club is best described as old-school,” she said. “The members are an eclectic mix of ages and professions, all of them warm and welcoming and ready to share their knowledge and passion for a game that suits all ages and abilities.

“The unique thing about this club is that it’s a pokie-free zone, perfect for families and people who enjoy conversation and social interaction.”
