Braybrook is the most burgled suburb in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, the RACV’s yearly analysis of burglary hot spots in greater Melbourne shows.
One in 44 Braybrook homes was burgled last financial year, giving the suburb a “riskier than average” rating.
The city of Maribyrnong average was one in 67 households burgled, while the state average was one in 69. Postcode 3032, which includes the suburb of Maribyrnong, had the lowest burglary rate in the municipality, with one in 79 homes broken into.
One in 62 homes was burgled in postcode 3012, covering Brooklyn, Maidstone, Kingsville and West Footscray.
Footscray and Seddon households had a one in 68 chance of being broken into, with this number dropping to one in 77 in Yarraville.
The RACV’s Bryce Prosser said 17 per cent of all burglaries happened through unlocked or open doors or windows.
“We encourage all Victorians to put in place measures to protect their homes, including installing good-quality locks on doors and windows and installing curtains and blinds to remove valuable items from plain sight,” he said.
Every Hobsons Bay suburb received a “safer than average” rating, with an overall average of one in 117 homes burgled.
Williamstown and Williamstown North recorded the lowest number at one in 149, closely followed by Altona and Seaholme at one in 147. The highest chance of being burgled in Hobsons Bay was in Altona Meadows and Laverton, where one in 102 homes was burgled.
One in 104 homes in Altona North were burgled and one in 112 in Newport.
The RACV said its data was compiled using data from bodies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Crime Statistics Agency.
