Man charged for forceful citizen’s arrest

A man is facing charges after making a citizen’s arrest in Epping on Friday night.

The Brooklyn car yard worker, 21, said his 4WD was stolen about lunchtime the same day.

He posted a notification on his Facebook page asking friends to look out for his car and soon enough it was spotted in Craigieburn.

The man was driving with his friends when they saw the car and followed it to Park Street, Epping.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the man allegedly rammed his own car, causing extensive damage.

He and his friends then detained the male driver and female passenger until police arrived.

“The driver of the stolen car and his female passenger told police that they were allegedly assaulted by the car owner and his friends prior to police arrival,” Ms Batty said.

The driver, 23, of Craigieburn, was hospitalised overnight.

He appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with car theft.

The car owner has been interviewed by police and is expected to be charged with conduct likely to cause serious injury in relation to ramming his own vehicle.

Police are still investigating the assault allegations.
