Bulldogs players Zaine Cordy and Nathan Hrovat are urging footy fans and anyone else who can to get behind The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal.
The pair have been helping coach children under the care of The Salvation Army Westcare, an organisation providing support and services to children in the western suburbs who aren’t able to live with their families.
They are urging people to dig deep this weekend and help the appeal raise $74 million across the country to continue the support of more than one million Australians in need.
The Salvation Army helps about 2000 people each night with crisis accommodation, emotional support and essential supplies such as food and blankets.
Funds raised through the Red Shield Appeal go directly to The Salvation Army’s social and community service programs, which includes helping prevent those on the brink of homelessness.
Salvation Army captain Matthew Kean, who runs the Second Gear op shop in Altona, urged people to volunteer their time during the Red Shield Appeal doorknock weekend.
“At the op shop, we see a lot of the community come in and out of the store,” he said. “More and more people are coming to us for help and unemployment is one of the biggest reasons.
“The Hobsons Bay community is really generous and a lot of people try to help.”
