Bull’s backyard blitz is back

Yarraville tradie Erin Bull is used to working on other people’s homes, but on on Saturday November 15 he’ll be doing so for free.

Mr Bull and dozens of other tradies and volunteers will descend on 35 Ballard Street, Yarraville, for the second annual Backyard Blitz competition.

“Basically how it works is we get people to nominate someone else who they think has been doing it tough and had a bit of bad run,” Mr Bull said of Backyard Blitz, which he ran for the first time last year.

“We picked Jennifer who lived in West Footscray who’d had numerous setbacks over the previous 12 months.

“I organised 20-plus businesses and 45 volunteers to donate their time, service and products for a Saturday and we did as much as we could in one day.

“The results were pretty amazing and we changed Jennifer’s life.”

This year, Mr Bull chose a Yarraville woman who’d recently suffered dual family tragedies and had been nominated by her two daughters.

“We’re gonna be focusing a lot on the garden,” Mr Bull said of the work they’ll be doing on the unnamed woman’s home.

“We’re putting a new lawn in, we’re doing painting, we’ve got electricians doing some electrical work, plumbers fixing storm water issues. We’ve got some builders as well installing a deck.”

Mr Bull estimates the work will cost between $50,000 and $70,000, with most of the materials donated.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to cover the cost of materials that haven’t been donated
