Hobsons Bay residents can see their industrial history come alive next month at a cabaret and fashion show featuring a glowing dress made from local people’s X-rays and songs about old trains and thriving businesses.

Cabaret amongst the Carriages features local songs, musicians, dancers, designers and industries coming together to tell the story of industry in Hobsons Bay at the Newport Railway Museum.

Director and producer Donna Jackson said the event will celebrate the west through fashion and music.

“This is a way to tell stories about our local history, which is an industrial history, which is now disappearing and the area is changing,” she said.

As well as the X-ray dress, the fashion parade will feature an apron made from tin cans from the former Goetz Cannery in Spotswood and a ‘battle dress’ made from parts from the former Toyota car plant in Altona.

Jackson said the event will be held undercover between a giant diesel engine and a Heavy Harry, which is the biggest locomotive ever built in Australia.

“For the first 45 minutes, people can wander in and out of the carriages, meet the designers and view the fashion parade,” she said.

Jackson said the second hour will be devoted to new songs about the museum and existing industries written by Victoria University music students.

Cabaret amongst the Carriages is on at the Newport Railway Museum at 26 Champion Road in Newport on Friday, November 11 and Saturday, November 12 from 7.30pm.
