Melbourne-based greyhound rescue organisation Gumtree Greys has reached out for Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay residents to consider adopting or fostering a greyhound as numbers continue to dwindle as the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions leads to a number of carers and foster parents deciding to travel.
Gumtree Greys volunteer director Fiona Milne said a number of pound or shelters have either reached capacity or have started to near capacity.
“We desperately need volunteer foster carers from the western suburbs,” she said.
“While the lock downs saw a huge number of greyhounds adopted, there has now been a slow down.
“Many people want to travel and can’t commit to fostering or adopting.”
Ms Milne said Gumtree Greys would pay for all reasonable vet costs while a dog lives with foster carers, who would be required to pay for food and provide inside accommodation for the greyhound.
“Fostering allows us to match the right dog to the right household,” she said.
“Not only can the greyhound adjust to domestic life, but we can advise potential adoptees on the temperament and suitability of the dog, based on what our foster volunteer says.
“Fostering is a great opportunity for people who love dogs – but don’t want the responsibility of one permanently – to enjoy having one for a few months.”
