Children will be at risk if removing a level crossing at Williamstown North train station and building a flyover causes more motorists to use Williamstown as a route to Point Cook, according to a resident.
Jason Bryce is calling on the state government to reconsider plans to remove the crossing.
Instead, he wants the pedestrian underpass, which was removed by VicTrack last year, to be reinstated.
Labor made a pre-election promise to remove the crossing in Ferguson Street, Williamstown, where two children died more than 20 years ago and a man suffered brain damage after being dragged by a train in 2011.
Mr Bryce said he was concerned a flyover would attract more cars to the intersection, which is near three schools.
“Yes, I’m concerned about the heritage and the village nature of Williamstown and I don’t want to see a motorway going through Ferguson Street or a big flyover going past our heritage homes and the Bristol Hotel,” he said.
“But the safety of the kids is going to be put at risk if more cars are going to be coming through that intersection.”
Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the community overwhelmingly supported removing the level crossing.
“I have every confidence that fixing these crossings is the right approach,” he said.
