Carjacking attempt in Altona

A mother and daughter are warning people to lock their car doors after escaping a potential carjacking in Altona on Saturday.

The mother, who asked not to be named, was travelling west in Queen Street, just west of the Pier Street roundabout, about 10.15pm.

She said a youth “with dead eyes” suddenly appeared in front of her station wagon.

“He had put up his hand to stop us and I’m just thinking, he’s just being a dickhead, as kids do, playing chicken on the road or trying to be a smarty pants,” she said.

“He just kept looking over to the park [Logan Reserve] where his mates were obviously and then he waved them over.

“That’s when [my daughter] said ‘mum, mum, lock the door, lock the door.’

“I beeped the horn and then he’s tried to get in the front door.

“I just thought, ‘I’m just gonna put my foot down and drive’.

“As I drove past him, he grabbed onto the antenna, the aerial.

“It was 101 per cent a carjacking attempt.”

Detective Senior Constable Dave Baskin of Altona North police said people shouldn’t be alarmed.

“This seems like a one-off incident I believe,” he said.

Police are hoping anyone with information will come forward.

The offender was described as being of African appearance, about 183 centimetres, with short dark hair, wearing a white T-shirt, three-quarter shorts and no shoes.

Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
