Celebrating community at open day

On Saturday, May 6, The West Gate Tunnel is hosting a free family day to celebrate the project nearing completion.

To celebrate the West Gate Tunnel Project nearing completion , the project is hosting a Community Day to give back to the Maribyrnong community for their patience.

On Saturday, May 6, The family day will be held at the West Gate Tunnel Project Info Centre, at the corner of Somerville Road and Whitehall Street, Yarraville from 11am-3pm.

The community is invited to a day of free family-friendly activities, live entertainment and refreshments.

For more than a year, tunnel boring machines have been steadily digging their way under Yarraville 24 hours a day.

The tunnelling under the Yarraville is creating two twin tunnels that will create an alternative to the West Gate Bridge.

In February, one of the tunnel boring machines broke through, completing a 2.8km trip, excavating over 1,000,000 tonnes of rock and soil while installing more than 10,000 individual concrete segments.

The next step has meant crews are now building the road deck and installing electrical, lighting and safety systems to prepare the tunnel for completion in 2025.

The second tunnel boring machine is expected to come to its journey’s end next month, after completing a 4km journey.
