Former Braybrook College student Christine Basco has been recognised as an ambassador for the state government’s Vocational Education and Training [VET] Champions initiative, which aimed to showcase high-achieving Victorians who have built successful careers through vocational education and training.
Now an Epworth HealthCare theatre nurse, she started as a graduate nurse at Epworth Richmond four years ago.
Ms Basco said she was grateful for the vocational training she received during her secondary education.
“I studied VET community services as part of my VCE subjects at Braybrook College in year 11 and 12, undertaking placements at local community hubs and an employment service for people with disabilities,” she said.
“I knew from an early age I loved advocating for people.
“When I studied community services, I engaged with vulnerable groups in the community and I decided nursing was the right path for me.”
Ms Basco initially worked with brain injury rehabilitation patients, before moving to orthopaedics and into her current role as an anaesthetic and recovery nurse, but has continued to volunteer at Braybrook College to speak to students about the values of the VET program.
“I love encouraging people and making sure their rights are respected and their dignity is maintained,” she said.
Epworth Richmond executive general manager Allison Evans said it was “wonderful” to have Ms Basco recognised as a champion of the VET program.
“The fact she remains involved in her old school, helping and inspiring students, speaks volumes,” she said.
“They are the sort of qualities we look for when we hire staff at Epworth.”
