Hobsons Bay council has adopted a renewed plan outlining how it would continue to respond to the effects of climate change.
During its meeting on Tuesday, June 28, councillors passed a motion to note the community feedback on the draft plan, revoke previous plans concerning council’s responses to climate change and adopt the Hobsons Bay Response to Climate Change Action Plan 2022.
Strand Ward councillor Jonathon Marsden said the majority of public participants indicated they wanted council to play a role in improving the sustainability of new private developments.
“Over 80 per cent of participants expressed interest in receiving information and support from Council to support them to take their own action,” he said.
The council implemented a range of changes to the draft plan within the adopted plan, including:
* Highlight the legal risk for council of not taking action to address climate change;
* Providing a stronger and more extensive acknowledgement of the role of Traditional Owners; and
* Acknowledging that vulnerable residents are most at risk from the impacts of climate change and that support is needed to address quality social housing and cost of living pressures.
Cr Marsden said the plan outlined that council considered its approach to climate change as important.
“It’s a flashing red light on our council dashboard,” he said.
