Community members are being invited to contribute to a condolence book to be sent to the mayor of Christchurch on behalf of Hobsons Bay.
Hobsons Bay council said people could contribute in any form that was meaningful to them, such as letters, poetry, drawings, artworks and other expressions of condolence.
It comes as non-Muslim members of the Hobsons Bay Interfaith Network issued a written statement offering their deepest sympathy to the Muslim community in Hobsons Bay in response to the terror attack in New Zealand.
“We are horrified that peaceful worshippers were killed and injured as they were at prayer,” it reads in part.
“We commit ourselves to standing with our Muslim neighbours in this time of tragedy.
“We rejoice that we live in a multicultural and multifaith community, and that all of us have been welcomed into Hobsons Bay by the elders of the Kulin Nations, who are the sovereign peoples of this land. We reject anything that divides us from one another.”
The council’s condolence book is at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona.
Community members can also send condolences via local libraries, the council’s Facebook page or by emailing customerservice@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au until April 19.
