Clarrie’s date with fame

Clarrie, a three-legged cat from Altona Meadows, stars in the 2018 Lort Smith Backyard Heroes calendar, which raises money to help animals in need.

The two-year-old domestic cat was a joint winner in the people’s choice category of the calendar competition.

Marlene Prow said a friend found Clarrie as a tiny stray kitten with an injured front leg.

“He was so small, he sat in my hand,” she said.

Clarrie’s injured leg had to be amputated at Lort Smith animal hospital.

“He’s adapted very, very well to having three legs,” Ms Prow said. “Now, he’s best friends with three labs. My other cat doesn’t really like him still, but that’s OK.”

Lort Smith chief executive David Herman said the animal hospital and adoption hub received no operational government funding.

“We exclusively rely on the generosity of supporters to continue to care for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and to support the pets of people in crisis,” he said.

“All profits from the sale of the calendars will go directly to supporting Lort Smith’s vitally important work in 2018.”

The competition to find cats for the 2019 calendar will start in February.

Calendars, at a cost of $15 plus postage, are available from the Lort Smith hospital or its website.
