Hobsons Bay residents are encouraged to flex their green thumbs as part of an upcoming World Environment Day event.
The council is hosting a community planting day at Truganina Park on Sunday, June 5 from 10am until 1pm, as well as a ‘Healthy Habitats’ information session with marine biologist Dr Chris Gillies and local sustainability leaders at the Newport Community Hub from noon until 3pm.
Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the activities will provide an opportunity for the community to learn how to protect, preserve and enjoy the local environments.
“Hobsons Bay is blessed with some of the most beautiful biodiverse locations in the state, but these areas are also some of the most fragile,” he said.
“Climate change poses a major threat to our biodiversity and as the present custodians of the land we have an obligation to learn about and protect our habitats for future generations.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to hear Dr Chris Gillies speak about his amazing work restoring the shellfish reefs in Port Phillip Bay.”
The ‘Healthy Habitats’ session will also include a presentation with local sustainability leaders from the Hobsons Bay Wetlands Centre Dr Marilyn Olliff, Dr Rebecca Patrick and Gordon Lescinsky, a performance by the Newport Community Choir and an art exhibition from the Hobsons Bay Arts Society.
The 2022 World Environment Day campaign #OnlyOneEarth calls for collective and transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore the planet.
