Cleaning up the local landscape and creating long-lasting friendships have come together as part of the Maribyrnong River Rubbish Club.
Running for the past four years, the club has been meeting once a month to clear the riverbed and nearby areas of debris.
Co-organiser Neil Sgroi said the club has about 20 to 30 regular volunteers, with regular sites being near Tannery Reserve and near the Heavenly Queen Temple.
“We usually grab brunch or a coffee after,” he said.
Mr Sgroi said the group usually collects about 70 kilograms, with one large collection totalling 137 kilograms.
“We report it all,” he said.
The club will be meeting at the Stony Creek Reserve at 310 Hyde Street in Yarraville on Friday, June 17 from 11am to 1pm.
Participants are encouraged to bring Water, closed shoes, sun protection and gloves.
A representative from the Maribyrnong Council will be on hand to discuss the ways in which the council is managing the reserve and to assist with the clean up.
