Community pitch brings the cash

Inner-west community groups have enjoyed a funding boost of more than $20,000 thanks to local businesses and a community bank.

Organisations who took part in the recent Seddon Community Bank Pitch Night shared in $21,555 given away to various projects and causes.

Branch manager Graham Evans said the event had exceeded the expectations of the bank, which gave away $7000 on the night.

“There were about 18 groups given three minutes each to pitch for a project or program they run,” he said.

“At the end of the night a pile of cash was given away.”

Mr Evans said another important aspect of the night was the chance for the different groups to meet and learn about other groups in the area.

Kingsville Baptist Cricket Club secretary Wes Henstridge said his club had received $1400 to help refugees with their registrations and other expenses.

“We have got a number of Sri Lankan refugee players at our club; they have such enthusiasm, they really love the game.”

The club also received a $500 sports equipment voucher from The Welcome Group, another beneficiary on the night.

The Welcome Group founder and president Penny Daly said the cricket club was placed to make the best use of the voucher for a good cause.

Her organisation’s pitch attracted almost $2000 towards its campaign for a trailer to deliver material aid such as fridges and mattresses to refugees to help them settle into the community.

“It’s such an amazing thing that businesses in the inner-west are willing to put their hand up and donate to these grassroots causes.”
