Maribyrnong council has outlined guidelines for how it will approach medium densing housing opportunities into the future, with the approval of the release of its Maribyrnong Medium Density Design Guide for public consultation.
At its meeting on Tuesday, July 26, the Maribyrnong City Development Committee passed a motion to endorse the draft guide for release for public consultation and note a further report would be provided to council in late 2022 following public consultation.
Medium density housing typologies include a range of housing types, such as detached dwellings, apartments, side by side, front and back, terrace, block or courtyard configurations of housing.
The draft guide would outline best practice controls and design standards for various forms of medium density housing within Maribyrnong and inform future changes to the Maribyrnong Planning Scheme.
Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran said everyone would be welcome to have their say on the draft guide.
“Please do get involved with this sort of strategy because this will form the basis of a lot of the developments going forward for the city of Maribyrnong and more importantly, in a city that is very tightly condensed already, having community consultation in relation to this sort of strategy is going to be key to ensuring that it still feels like it is our city,” he said.
“This goes a long way to ensure that those pocket parks, those little strips of green here and there remain and…flourish.”
Councillor Simon Crawford said the strategy would contribute towards efforts to protect green and open spaces.
“It’ll be really interesting to see what effect it has on future developments,” he said.
“We are certainly passionate about our open spaces but the reality is most of the land in Maribyrnong is private
“A lot of the time, we have been losing a lot of canopy, a lot of vegetation, a lot of natural permeable land.”
