Inner-west residents looking for somewhere to cool off in the heat will have to look further afield with the 50-metre pool at the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre closed due to contamination.
MAC management announced the closure at about 1pm on Wednesday 7 January when the temperature had already climbed to almost 40 degrees.
“Please be advised that due to a contamination incident in our 50m pool and in accordance with health regulations, the pool will be closed for the remainder of today,” a post on the MAC Facebook page said.
“We are taking all necessary steps to ensure the pool is safe and compliant with health standards. The 50m pool will reopen tomorrow as normal.”
MAC is the largest aquatic centre in Maribyrnong and like other pools, beaches and swimming locations in Melbourne, was expected to be at capacity today at the beginning of what is anticipated to be the strongest heatwave to hit the city in years.
Temperatures are expected to drop to around 30 degrees on Thursday before spiking again on Friday when a top of 41 is expected.
