Winter is traditionally a quieter period for many of our traders in Altona and Seaholme, which makes it the perfect time to undertake essential road improvement works in preparation for summer.

Council is ploughing ahead with Pier Street stage four works that focus on improving pedestrian safety on the southern end of Pier Street from Queen Street to Altona Beach, with wider footpaths and safer crossings.

The works will also increase the potential for outdoor dining, as well as creating a more attractive community space to enjoy an ice cream or impromptu picnic.

There will be some impacts on traffic and parking while these works progress, with the southern end of Pier Street closed off for a few weeks.

The shops and cafes will still be open and will need our support more than ever, so please continue to visit and shop local over winter.

Parking is available along the Esplanade, the Altona Homestead car park and further north up Pier Street off Edwards Lane, on Railway Street south and the Bent Street carpark at Blyth Street.

Consultation for council’s Parking Management Strategy closed last week.

Thank you to everyone who had their say through council’s Participate website – your feedback will help shape the final strategy.

Don’t forget, if you live in Hobsons Bay, you’re entitled to apply for ticket machine parking permits that exempt you from paid parking across the municipality.

You can apply via the Council’s website.

Speaking of permit applications, you can now apply for a parking permit at Altona North library, which was recently launched as a Council+ service centre.

As well as parking permits, you can also visit Council+ service centres to borrow a book, use video conferencing, pay your rates, upsize bins or check a planning application.

It’s all about making it easier to access Council services.

Council+ is also live at Williamstown and Altona Meadows, with more sites to be launched by the end of the year.

In further evidence of how awesome our libraries are, they are extending their opening hours, abolishing fees on overdue items and lifting borrowing limits.

If you haven’t visited the library for a while, now is the perfect time to become reacquainted with these amazing community spaces.

My daughter and I are both excited about the opening of the new Hosken Reserve playground.

With adventure equipment for children of all ages, Hosken Reserve is a great place to stop after a walk along the Kororoit Creek trail, with a dog off-leash area and BBQ facilities.
