Cool kids put best foot forward for climate

Four friends seeking a brighter future for their planet are preparing to take part in this month’s Melbourne Marathon.

Seddon’s Mischa Carr, 11, will join his mates Ben, Michael and Spencer in tackling a shortened 5.7-kilometre section of the course on Sunday, October 18, in the hope of raising $2500 for environmental campaign Climate for Change.

Mischa says the Cool Kids for Climate team wants to help Climate for Change, created by his mother, Katerina Gaita, as it works towards a more sustainable future.

“Climate for Change is an organisation trying to prevent climate change from happening by spreading the message using the Tupperware party model,” he said. “We want to grow up in a world we can enjoy.”

Climate for Change recognises that most people want to take strong action on tackling climate change and helps provide the means to pressure leaders to act.

Michael said it was important that people understood the changes the world would undergo without more being done to reduce the impact of climate change.

“Sea levels will rise and people who live on the islands in the Pacific are going to lose their homes,” he said. “There’s also going to be less rain, it will change the animals’ habitat and there will be more droughts and bushfires.”

The boys, who are in grade 5 at Footscray City and Yarraville West primary schools, are seeking sponsorship from local businesses and individual supporters and will take part in other fundraising activities such as busking.

Ben said the fun run distance was not daunting as they had covered similar distances in school cross-country events.
