Confusion has reigned over whether it is permissible to use Altona and Williamstown beaches for activities such as windsurfing and stand up paddleboarding (SUP) under the state’s stage three restrictions.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson this week confirmed they are allowed.

“The Victorian Chief Health Officer has provided advice that canoeing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, rowing and surf skiing are permitted as long as physical distancing is complied with and people don’t travel large distances to do them,” the spokesperson said.

Windsurfing Victoria posted in a statement that members of the community were required to self manage effectively.

“Stay in closer to shore and sail only in conditions that are self rescue (ie no extreme or offshore winds),” it said.

“No heroics please. For everyone’s benefit. Any situations creating negative public sentiment or requiring official intervention (group gathering or rescue etc) will jeopardise this highly-valued access.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Colleen Gates said the council was following directives set by the state and federal governments.

“Public gatherings are not allowed on the beaches, ovals or any other open space,” she said.

“We also note that the advice states that people should not be travelling to exercise so if you need to drive to the beach or the dog park you probably shouldn’t be there.

“Access to the beach is only for surfing, swimming, running, walking or exercise purposes.”
