Hobsons Bay council has responded to two petitions protesting parking restrictions and changes around Seaholme train station.

Petitioners are calling on the council to abandon parallel parking on Central Avenue and two-hour parking in Waratah Street, Wattle Grove and Acacia Avenue.

Councillor Tony Briffa moved a motion at the last council meeting to abandon the plans if there was majority support.

“[Deputy mayor] Cr [Daria] Kellander and I have spoken with a number of residents in this area that were very aggrieved, very concerned, about not only what was being proposed but also the way that we consulted with residents,“ Cr Briffa said.

“We don’t expect that this will come back into a future ordinary council meeting because if majority support is received by those local residents who are most affected by this proposal, then it just won’t proceed.“

Cr Kellander said she was glad to see the issue coming to an end.

“It’s been almost a year since it first came into the public domain and the fact that the proposal’s now being abandoned goes to show how important it is to have real, genuine consultation with the people who are going to be impacted and have to live with that decision every day.“

As reported by Star Weekly in March, some commuters were angered the changes meant no all-day parking north of the station and could deter people from catching the train.

More than 80 submissions from the community were received by the council.
