Having made changes to its draft local laws following community feedback, Maribyrnong council is seeking community feedback on those changes.
Following community consultation in March, council decided to dump some proposed local laws and make changes and updates to others.
“Different proposed laws received varied levels of support, and others called for additional thinking,” said Maribyrnong mayor Pradeep Tiwari of the feedback.
“Given the feedback, as well as internal reviews and modern thinking, we have made changes to the draft local law to better reflect our community’s expectations.”
Among those changes are the scrapping of permits for commercial dog walkers and the number of animals permitted on properties remaining the same.
For property owners, permits will no longer be required for nature strip planting and rules regarding unsightly and dangerous land will be strengthened, with owners and occupiers required to keep them safe and tidy and a clause added requiring them to keep buildings in good condition.
Rules around regulating abandoned and unregistered vehicles have also been tightened and clauses added allowing council to declare some areas as smoke-free.
Cr Tiwari invited Maribyrnong residents to let council know if they had got the changes right.
“Local laws affect all of us, so council is now calling on the community to provide feedback on the draft local law and its changes.
“You can get involved at one of our in-person events, or by participating online.”
