Maribyrnong council has opened the doors to take more steps towards removing barriers and strengthen local Indigenous communities, with applications for its First Nations Advisory Committee now open.
The purpose of the First Nations Advisory Committee would be to provide guidance and support to council on issues and barriers which affect the Reconciliation process, as well as to provide advice on the development and implementation of strategies to deliver positive outcomes for First Nations people.
After beginning its formal reconciliation journey in 2017, the council developed a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in 2020 with the support of the Maribyrnong Reconciliation Action Plan Advisory Committee.
This committee is now being reactivated and reframed as the First Nations Advisory Committee to work with council.
In addition to two councillors and at least one senior Council Officer from the Community Service Directorate, the committee will also consist of up to 10 community members and up to three representatives from community controlled organisations, agencies or service providers who have a strategic link with First Nations communities in Maribyrnong, consisting of
Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members will be appointed to the committee for a term of two years, with meetings held six times a year.
