Hobsons Bay young people are encouraged to learn how to prepare themselves to enter the workforce, as part of job readiness workshops.

Arrive and Thrive co-founder Tyson Day is facilitating the free Get Job Ready workshops.

Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the workshops will increase the skills of young people to increase their opportunities to secure employment, as part of a $162,000 investment through the council’s COVID-19 community support package.

“We are committed to delivering free and practical employment workshops to assist young people who may be struggling from the latent impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic; particularly those who have missed opportunities to secure employment or experience during key developmental years,” he said.

Student and participant Jake Greenham said the workshop is a useful way to gain a different outlook on his employability.

“I found the workshop very helpful today because it’s given me a different perspective on myself and how much more qualities I have than what I thought I did beforehand,” he said.

“All of those qualities can go into things such as my resume or when I go for a job interview how I talk about myself.”

Fellow participant Stella Joseph said the workshops are preparing her to be more job-ready.

“I feel pretty nervous because I’m going straight into working full time after I finish VCAL, but because of all the things we do like this program, it helps to get us ready for things like that and makes us more confident to be more independent,” she said.

Sessions will be held at Newport Community Hub and the Altona Meadows library, with the majority of sessions accessible online.
