As Maribyrnong reflects on the first anniversary of the Maribyrnong floods, council said it recognises what a challenging time it has been for the community and continues to be for many residents, 12 months on.
More than 500 properties were impacted when the Maribyrnong River breached its banks in October 2022.
Hundreds of residents were displaced, with many still unable to return to their homes and others managing ongoing challenges with insurance and repairs.
In acknowledging the immediate response from the community, Mayor Sarah Carter said she is also conscious there is still work to be done.
“A year ago our community experienced a devastating blow with hundreds of residents’ lives turned upside down in a matter of hours,” she said.
“The rallying grass-root response by our community at the time was phenomenal and there have since been colossal and ongoing efforts to aid in the recovery, but we still have a long way to go.
“We stand with our residents and all those who were affected by the flood and understand that the one-year mark, compounds the trauma experienced by many.
“We continue to be here for those still struggling to make a safe return to their homes and are working with all levels of our community and government to do all that we can to ensure new safeguards are in place to mitigate against any future flooding of the Maribyrnong River.”
