Council to revisit Yarraville paid parking next week

A move to halt paid parking in Yarraville until February will be debated at a special meeting of Maribyrnong Council that has been called for next Friday.

Star Weekly this week reported Cr Sarah Carter has been working behind the scenes to build support for the motion, which was due to go before the next ordinary meeting on December 15.

Cr Carter said the looming Christmas shopping period made it essential to consider the matter sooner rather than later.

The motion was finalised on Thursday night and the December 4 meeting date due to be confirmed Friday.

“I will be recommending a moratorium on their operation while we consider the data that has been collected,” Cr Carter said.

“You need the mayor or three councillors to call a special meeting; we have got the three councillors and I’m hopeful it will be a positive outcome.”

Cr Carter this week described the paid parking situation as “a hot mess” resulting from a haphazard roll-out of the parking meters into Yarraville.

Cr Carter said the week since the violent attack on councillors Grant Miles and Nam Quach had been a period of trying to rebuild broken relationships among councillors.

Steps to improve security at the development committee meeting held on Tuesday night included the compulsory signing in of all visitors, the wearing of name tags, a reduced number of seats in the public gallery and ropes placed between councillors and the public.
