Councillor Column – Cr Cuc Lam

Chúc mừng năm mới, Happy New Year to everyone who helped welcome in the Lunar New Year in Footscray. It was a great event which celebrated the Year of the Tiger and so pleasing to see our community coming together respectfully in a COVIDsafe way.

Though we may be out of lockdown, there are still restrictions in place to create a safer environment for all of our community. Please don’t forget to wear your mask, check-in using the QR code and show your proof of vax where required. We are all in this together.

Another important step is getting your booster shot when eligible to do so. There are many GPs and pharmacies locally that are available to administer this.

I would also like to thank the community who have been supporting their loved-ones who have been in isolation with COVID in the last month with care packages and deliveries. It has been heart-warming to see the community spirit shine through.

A reminder that there is also help available if you don’t have anyone close to lean on. Council’s Community Strengthening team can provide information, referral to local emergency relief and wellbeing services, food relief in the form of grocery vouchers and some material aid. To get in touch with the team please call 9688 0434 or email Community.Strengthening@maribyrnong.vic.gov.au

Last week we hosted a public forum ‘Medicinal Cannabis a Maribyrnong enterprise?’ in both Vietnamese and English, with the support of Vietnamese Community in Australia – Victoria Chapter, and the Footscray Asian Business Association. The forum created an opportunity for locals to discuss and ask questions around Council’s proposal to establish a medicinal cannabis business to reduce the burden on ratepayers. We want to understand the level of community support before deciding whether to proceed to a feasibility study and risk assessment. There is still time to share your thoughts over at YourCityYourVoice.com.au
