Councils meet in Community Cricket World Cup

Cross-river rivalries could reach fever pitch this month as Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley councils join forces to host a Community Cricket World Cup.

The February 21 event at McIvor Reserve in Yarraville and Fairbairn Park in Ascot Vale will have councillors from each side of the Maribyrnong River going head-to-head in a friendly match between the municipalities as part of the community event.

Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the seven-a-side tournament was about playing social cricket with friends.

“It doesn’t matter if you are a cricketer or not – the day promises to be a fun day out for the family,” he said.

“Last year’s event was a great success … it was so much fun to have a friendly competition against our neighbours over in Moonee Valley, which we are excited about doing again.”

Moonee Valley mayor Andrea Surace says the free event will include games for juniors, males and females, as well as the match between councillors.

“Last year was declared a draw so I’m keen to see Moonee Valley come out on top this time,” she said.

All teams will play a minimum of three one-hour matches, competing to be crowned winner of either the Maribyrnong or Moonee Valley Community Cricket World Cup for 2016.

Register your team until February 15 at www.mvcc.vic.gov.au/cricketcup or phone 9243 8888.
